Animal Welfare

At Sürsan, we recognize that fish are sentient beings. We announce our commitment so that, 100% of sea bass and sea bream, marketed by Sürsan will be effectively stunned before slaughter from now onwards.

  • Effective stunning methods cause loss of consciousness within the second and more than 95% of fish. Immersion in ice or ice water is not considered an effective stunning method.

  • Electrical stunning devices used shall be automatic and designed for the species and commercial sizes it applies to. In the case of electrical stunning, it will be used on fish in semi-dry conditions as long as a protocol is followed that guarantees its effectiveness.

  • The personnel will be trained to properly use the machinery adequately and recognize the effectiveness of stunning properly. In addition, there will be a secondary system for culling in case any individual is not effectively stunned.

  • This commitment will be made public on the corporate website and demonstrated through own or third-party audits. Sürsan will publicly report progress towards meeting this commitment annually.

This agreement is subject to modification to incorporate new scientific evidence and technological advances, such as developing new stunning systems.
